Choo Yilin's Bamboo - Beautiful & Strong

The evergreen Bamboo plant has been rooted within Asian culture for some 7000 years. This plant played a pivotal role in Chinese history as a writing medium before paper was invented. Key historical moments and records which provide us a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors were written on and thus preserved in this significant plant.

Here at Choo Yilin, we take utmost pride in the safekeeping of important Asian icons and stories for the generations to come - and today, we're humbled to bring you the inspirational story of the Bamboo motif and why we were deeply inspired by this otherwise unassuming flora.

As we strive everyday to find better and more beautiful ways to tell stories of heritage, conservation, and love - it's no surprise that we often find ourselves turning to nature for that extra dose of inspiration. Nature's proud handiwork, the beautiful flowers of all shapes and sizes, often serve as muses for their kaleidoscope of colours and beautiful silhouettes. However, the lanky Bamboo with its slim frame and emerald hues? Not quite the fan favourite.

At Choo Yilin, we go beyond the superficial - diving deep into each chosen motif for their symbolism and role in Asian heritage and culture. In this aspect, the modest Bamboo was a clear winner. It was no wonder why the Bamboo was lauded by Chinese philosophers and respected by the Japanese - everything they stood for was relatable and inspiring.

Compared to other large trees with their grandiose trunks and roots, the Bamboo looks meek and fragile in comparison. However, a reminder that strength is a virtue from within - the Bamboo plant remains as one of the sturdiest plants despite its appearance. It endures harsh winters, sweltering summers and torrential downpours to emerge season after season, unscathed and proud. Although it may sway along with the gentle breeze, its solid foundation found in the deep and firm roots enables it to remain steadfast and enduring.

One of the fastest growing plants in the world, the sight of the Bamboo in Spring after being blanketed in snow each winter, taller than ever, serves as a reminder of the importance of growth through adversity. Its gentle determination and resolute nature has inspired philosophers and poets for centuries and will likely continue to do so for the years to come. As storytellers in our own right, it only seemed right that we pay homage to these cultural icons in a fashion we do best - through meaningful, and stunning jewellery.

We believe in the magic of jewellery that resonates and strikes a chord from within. That jewellery is meant to be more than just beautiful. That we tell stories weaved between metalwork and gemstones.

The Bamboo Extension collection at Choo Yilin serves to do more than just adorn yourself with gorgeous pieces of jade jewellery. These pieces represent the virtues of the Bamboo and the important reminder and life lesson we can learn from their steadfast nature. To bend and sway with the life's winds of change, but do not break. To delve deep and remain rooted, to the simple yet important things in life. To acknowledge the importance of growth and emerge out of adversity stronger than before.

And this very collection encapsulates how we envision our women of Choo Yilin to be:
astonishingly beautiful and unapologetically strong.
